The 2002 vintage started in the considerable shadow of the classic 2001, but has subsequently emerged into a powerhouse in its own right. Warmer and slightly more compressed than 2001, the grapes were able, nonetheless, to come to full ripeness on the vine. With no rain on the horizon, the only pressure Marco faced was dealing with the occasional heat spike.

On the palate, the wine is all about balance and ripe fruit. As in the nose, black cherry is the predominant fruit. The flavors are very forward and open, much more so than in the 2001 wine when it was released. The mouthfeel is silky smooth and rich with a very long finish.

This wine is much more approachable now than its corresponding 2001 release which needed a little time to open up. Marco suggests you should not hesitate to open this wine with a hearty meal tonight, but on the other hand, this 2002 Diamond Mountain District Cabernet Sauvignon will continue to evolve and grow more complex and nuanced for the next five to ten years.
